Origins, Intent and Regulatory Oversight-340B Program

Enacted in 1992 as a part of the Veteran’s Health Care Act and codified as SS340B of the Public Health Service Act, this program was intended by Congress to help covered entities stretch scarce federal resources to reach more patients and provide more needed services. It is administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) with oversight carried out through its Office of Pharmacy Affairs (OPA).
