USP announced the release of a new app for iOS and Android devices as a hand-held reference tool for USP <800> Hazardous Drugs – Handling in Healthcare Settings.

The app currently cost $3.99 to download and is a very unique tool that can be customized for sites as they setup a user profile. The app touts the ability for sites to identify if a drug being handled by the site as being listed as hazardous based on the 2016 NIOSH defined categories: Antineoplastics; Non-antineoplastics; Reproductive-risk. Drug information is provided through an interface with DailyMed and will list information on how to safely handle the hazardous drugs based on standards.

It should be noted that USP states the limitations of the app as not a replacement for Safety Data Sheets, but an adjuvant, and, the app is not a full auditing app for sites. UPS encourages sites to download the free copy of USP <800> and use the app as a compliment to the chapter.

Reviews on the app site states; ‘worth every penny’ and we agree. This is the first app to provide healthcare providers with real-time information on handling of hazardous drugs in healthcare settings. Safety in your pocket!
